Banana
The banana gives us not only fruit, but also the fibre used as raw material for textiles. Winning the banana fibre is a very labour-intensive project. After the banana has yielded its fruit, it becomes useless and needs to be cut to give space for the new growth. The cut banana is peeled, then beaten with a stick and boiled with ashes. The next steps is to sort out the fibres from a slippery mush, accordingly to quality, and to wash them repeatedly with clear water. Then the fibres are dried and combed to prepare them for the spinning process. Indigo spins the banana fibre together with silk. The final thread is similar to linen and can be used in various ways. |
